Dessert Recipes

Oreo Truffles and cake pops have become one the most requested desserts when I’m asked to bake for a school party, birthday party or potluck. Thisoreo truffles recipe can be adapted to fit in with any theme by choosing different colored candy melts or sprinkles.

A few weeks ago I was trying to figure out something to make for Jonathans’s preschool graduation. There are usually a variety of cupcakes, cookies, and brownies so my search went on for something that was nut free and on the easier side to make. My husband mentioned Oreo Truffles, I had made them about a year ago. He must have really liked them because he very rarely requests a dessert, he’s not really into sweets.

You only need three ingredients to make this Oreo Truffle recipeOreos, cream cheese and candy melts or chocolate.

The Oreo balls are easy to make, but it’s can be time consuming to melt the candy melts and dip the truffles, especially if it’s your first time making them. Let’s just say if you are looking for something quick to make, and you’ve never made them before, you will need a lot of patience. The finished product pays off, and you’ll have some very happy guests. These Oreo Balls are always the first to go at any gathering or school party that we bring them to and I’m always being asked for the recipe.

Oreo Balls Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Oreo’s
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 lbs chocolate, or candy melts
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Directions:

  • Grind the Oreo’s in a blender or food processor until they become a fine powder.
  • Using a mixer, blend the cream cheese and Oreo powder until no cream cheese can be seen, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Roll into small or large balls and place on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.

*Tip to make these Oreo cookie balls

Use a cookie scoop to measure out the amount of Oreo mixture you’ll need and roll into a ball. Your Oreo balls will be a consistent size.

  • Let chill for 45 minutes or even overnight to allow the oreo balls to firm up.
  • After melting chocolate in a double-boiler or in a microwave, use a toothpick to dip each ball into the chocolate. Be sure to allow the excess chocolate to drip back into the melted chocolate to allow the truffles have a neater look. (If chocolate is to thick, add a tsp of shortening.)
  • Place on a second cookie sheet to set, add sprinkles before the chocolate hardens.
  • To get stripes, putting the melted chocolate in a small plastic bag and cutting the tip worked best.

Once the chocolate hardened and the truffles were refrigerated and cold they were delicious. They were very rich in flavor so if the truffles were any larger I think it would be too much. I snuck a couple before we brought them to Jonathan’s graduation and I wish I saved a few for at home. Once word got around about how delicious they were they went quick. All the parents, kids, and teachers were commenting on how good they were. Although the Oreo Balls were a little time consuming they were definitely worth all of the work.
