Sugar cookies are really easy to make. If you’re looking for cookies to decorate, look no further! This is my go to sugar cookies recipe when I need to decorate cookies. The dough is quickly made and can be cut into whatever shape you fancy.
How to make sugar cookies
First, sift flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl.
In another bowl, mix sugar, butter, almond essence and vanilla extract till creamy.
When creamy, add an egg and mix until fully incorporated.
Next, add flour a spoonful at a time and mix at a lower speed.
When the dough starts to look crumbly, stop mixing and use your hands to form a ball from the dough.
Wrap the dough in clingfilm and leave to chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour.
When the dough has been chilled, roll it out on a floured work surface and use a cookie cutter to cut out cookies.
Transfer the cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the oven until the cookies start to turn brown around the edges.
You’ll end up with delicious sugar cookies. Ready to decorate, or just eat them like this!

- 2 cups all-purpose flour 400 gram
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter 250 gram
- 1 cup sugar 180 gram
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or other flavoring)
- 1/2 teaspoon almond essence (or other flavoring)
- 1 egg

Instructions
Sift flour, baking powder and salt together in a bowl.
In another bowl cream the sugar, vanilla and almond essence with the butter until light and fluffy.Add the egg and mix until combined.
At a lower speed add the flour mixture a little bit at a time. Mix until combined and the dough starts to come together.Take the dough out of the bowl, shape into a ball, cover with clingfilm and put in the fridge to chill for at least 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 350 °F / 175 °C.
Line a baking sheet or cookie sheet with parchment paper.
On a floured work surface roll out the dough to 0,2 inch (0,5 cm) thick and cut into shapes.
Transfer cookies to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes until the cookies start to turn brown around the edges.

Please note that the cup measurements in this recipe are approximate. I have added cups for those that prefer using cups. The recipe is most accurate using weights measurements.

If it’s too sticky you can always add a little bit more flour, but don’t over do it. I hope it worked out!

Is if essential to add the almond essence? I’m looking to use the recipe for wedding favours and have no idea if anyone has a nut allergy.

No, you can leave it out or use another flavoring. Perhaps a little touch of lemon juice?

Just a note to the recipe. Preheating oven as the first step is totally unnecessary since making the dough takes time and it needs to chill too 😀 At least mine heats up in 10minutes… 😀

Why do you have pre heating the oven as step 1 then chilling the dough for an hour? Do you leave the oven on for the time it takes to chill? Seems a bit wasteful and would make more sense to pre heat the oven after step 5.

Hi Lala,
I have never stored these in a plastic treat bag so I don’t know. The best you can do is try one and see how long it will last. Another option is to store the wrapped cookies in an airtight container. They usually last about 1-2 weeks when I store them in a container.
